Reading Mail and Managing Documents with Vision Loss

Handling mail, reading documents, and managing paperwork can be challenging for individuals who are blind or visually impaired. Thankfully, there are many tools and services available to help.

Ways to Read Mail and Documents

Assistive Technology Apps – Many free and paid apps can read printed text aloud using a smartphone camera. Some popular options include:

  • Seeing AI (Microsoft) – Reads text, identifies objects, and even describes surroundings.

  • Be My Eyes – Connects users with sighted volunteers for real-time assistance.

  • Voice Dream Scanner – Converts printed text into speech.

Screen Readers & Magnifiers – Computers and smartphones have built-in accessibility features like:

  • Apple’s VoiceOver (iPhone/iPad/Mac)

  • Android’s TalkBack

  • JAWS and NVDA (for Windows computers)

Braille and Large Print Options – Some banks, utility companies, and government offices offer Braille or large print statements upon request. OAB can help members request these accommodations.

Talking Book & Mail Services – The National Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled (NLS) provides free audiobooks and braille materials by mail. The U.S. Postal Service also offers free mailing for Braille and talking books.
